Why "Dumb George W. Bush" is Politically Bullet Proof

It's been speculated by pundits that part of what put George Bush into the presidency was the framing of his image, by Democrats, as a buffoon. The Democrats were so successful at making the public believe that George Bush was an idiot, that when they finally saw him in debates with Al Gore, and in spite of Bush coming across very average, he stunned the audience on the upside because they expected him to fail miserably. As a result, he shined as compared to their expectations, whereas he might've actually looked bad if they'd been expecting someone brilliant.

This election, things are different: everyone's seen actual "Bushisms" for themselves. Yet, he's still stronger in the polls than his more articulate competitor, John Kerry. Why?

Nearly everyone has encountered a parent (perhaps even one's self) who very proudly boasts about how well their small child speaks at an early age. This parent seems to associate being able to speak well earlier than other children with the child being highly intelligent. But, recall that Albert Einstein didn't speak until he was four years old and wasn't fluent in his primary language until at least age eight. One should realize that the ability to articulate thoughts does not necessarily suggest that one's thoughts are all that brilliant. Similarly, the inability to articulate one's thoughts well doesn't necessarily mean that one isn't very bright. So while we've all seen President Bush sometimes getting tangled up in his words or using poor grammar, this doesn't necessarily suggest that he's an idiot.

John Kerry is different. Kerry is very articulate when he tells us his opinion for this week on specific subject matter. However, after a while, it becomes apparent that what he articulates so well this week directly contradicts what he so articulately expressed last week on the same issue. So we know that he is either wrong this week, or he was wrong last week. Which is it? And, worse, we can see this continual flip-flopping on conclusions happening over and over again, on the same issues, months - or even years - into the past. The person who is most often telling John Kerry that he is wrong is John Kerry himself. And John Kerry listens...again...and again.

President Bush, on the other hand, tends to maintain a consistent position, only changing his mind very, very slowly on important issues, and on those rare occasions when further thought has convinced George Bush to change his mind, he's very unlikey to change his mind back again.

So the difference between President Bush and Senator Kerry is the difference between the superficial and the substantive, between the shallow and the deep, and between the apparent and the real. And everyone, whether they've put this idea into words or not, grasps this at some level in their thinking.

Anyone can stumble over his words once in a while - I know that I do it - and George W. Bush does it more often than most. But if you think that means that he's stupid, then just imagine for a moment how foolish you'd think he was if, in addition to his verbal tripping, he couldn't maintain a position on any issues any longer than can John Kerry!

Aw C`mon, the guy is a feakin moron.
Anyone that cant see that is just as bad!

Posted by: Greg at April 20, 2006 01:35 PM

Wow...I ran across this commentary. It is amazing, this guy is a bigger moron than George Bush. Let me sum up Jeff. George Bush had his success because people are generally like you....sort of stupid. Now Jeff, look at what "the Bush" has done, or do I have to give an idiot like you an item by item list of the moronic, unethical, incompetent things this bafoon has done...

INCREDIBLE....

Posted by: Greg at May 23, 2006 06:49 AM

Oh, Greg.... Greg, Greg, Greg....

The reality is that George W. Bush was re-elected, to a very very large degree, because of people like you.

Posted by: Jeff at May 23, 2006 10:40 AM

i agree, bushisms are not indicative of idiocy, but, everything else in this mister is, and what is really sad, he got re-elected, how? how on earth a superpower assuming good education voted for this asshole, is the population of rednecks and hillbillys that high? or you are ready to destroy your country from inside out? go outside and demand investigation! the bush administration is taking all of you for retards. stop believing cnn and your media, you have been lied in your face. in fact bush is not an idiot, in fact is quite smart, is all the rest of the USA that needs a bit of reading and a passport, the news in the rest of the world are not the same than in yours. i apologize if any mistakes, english is not my native tongue.

Posted by: ale at June 5, 2006 01:11 PM

Actually, I tend to measure a person's intellectual abilities or cognitive potential by their actions. Judging by Bush's actions and accomplishments, I'd say he's either dangerously stupid, or dangerously greedy. At the end of the day, Bush and his cronies are accumulating incredbile material wealth directly related to his war with Iraq. And he's doing so with the blessing of many hard-working and misinformed Americans. Go ahead, Jeff. If you can still support someone who sells out the lives of Americans for billion dollar no-bid contracts and oil inflation, then you are either very misinformed yourself or the proverbial ostrich. Oh, and trying to say that Einstein's late verbal development is analogous to Bush's inability to articualte is freakin hilarious...thank for the laugh there. Einstein detailed the science of "nuclear" weapons, Bush can't even pronounce it!!! LMAO

Bush and everyone that voted for him screwed up this country like its never been screwed before.

Posted by: Alexa at August 1, 2006 02:54 AM

Well, Alexa, if that's what you really think, then I guess you won't mind packing up and moving to a better country somewhere else, eh? We'll wave goodbye to you as you go (but don't count on us waving with more than a single finger).

Posted by: Jeff at August 1, 2006 05:14 PM

give me a break. george bush is an idiot. the man who is leading this country cant even pronouce the word nuclear correctly. hes a moron

Posted by: lindsay at December 18, 2006 01:06 AM

You're a flucking idiot. Give me 3 instances of where Kerry 'Flip-flopped.' George Bush is an idiot, that is a straight fact, no opinion or bias there my friend. Anyone who stands by George Bush in the year 2007 needs to stop sucking the Republican teet of ignorance and think for themselves. Bush. Ruined. America. I'm your average Joe six-pack and I approve that message.

"President Bush, on the other hand, tends to maintain a consistent position, only changing his mind very, very slowly on important issues, and on those rare occasions when further thought has convinced George Bush to change his mind, he's very unlikey to change his mind back again."

So effing dumb. This is a BAD quality to have you ignorant schumck. George Bush has the WRONG position on almost every political issue. The fact that he screwed the world by going into Iraq, and the fact that people applaud him for maintaining his position and not pulling out, it is absolutely sickening. May God have mercy on you all.

Posted by: Allah at February 5, 2007 08:29 PM

Would Mr.President still be considered AWOL? I was hoping they would arrest him on that aircraft carrier. It's amazing that highly compressed fossilized micro-organisms can fuel so many vehicles and also war between people who don't believe that life existed far enough back in time for these organisms to exist.

bush is a dumnass, he needs to get over himself and stop trying to finish what his daddy couldn't!

Posted by: LittleMae at May 2, 2007 06:02 AM

God he is such a moron.. eg: The French Dont Even Have A Word For Entrepeneur.. Id rather have a monkey as president then have him.. but the amount of times he screws up is hilarious.

Posted by: TheFinalWish at May 15, 2007 04:43 AM

@TheFinalWish: Geezus...when you realize the error that you just made, you're going to realize who the real idiot is.

Posted by: Jeff at May 15, 2007 05:43 AM

say what you want about bush, the fact remains he IS "politically bulletproof" he has committed crimes of war and against humanity, partly for personal gain, and there isnt a court in the country that will judge him. thanks for the post jeff, i found it very informative and refreshing.

I find it amusing how vitriolic the responses to Jeff's little passage have been. No reason to argue with a crowd of people I generally have found to back up their arguements with other peoples' opinions whose opinions were based on other peoples' opinions; whom, in mass, have all agreed that certain things are true and whose sole defense always ends up being 'only an idiot wouldn't see that this is so'--always a scholarly and factual basis for anything. A great example is taking Jeff's reference to Einstein--which he simply used to point out that verbal skills aren't the sole indicator of intelligence--and inferring that he was comparing President Bush to Einstein in any way. As for those of you who don't live in the United States and your ceaseless complaining about how OUR news media doesn't tell US the truth about ourselves but YOURS tells YOU the truth about US--from what bizarre worldview does that make any sense, and how would you be better able to discern what's going on in the United States than its citizens--unless, of course, you are already under the belief that Americans are all idiots; in which case, what is the point in talking to you?

Posted by: Vyrquenox at June 3, 2007 05:20 AM

After reading this blog it appears everyone is incorrect in their assumptions.
Bush although appearing to be an idiot is in fact a very clever man.
Think about it, he allowed 9/11 to take place to invade Afganistan to take control of the oil pipeine there, He moved into Iraq to take control of the next section of pipeline and to take control of the oil.
Now remember he is an oil man who still has interests in oil.
The price of oil has jumped dramatically and even with some lowering of the price the gas price has continued to climb.
before 9/11 I paid $1.32 per gallon, now I pay $3.15 per gallon.
Katrina took out some production capacity and it was not rebuilt despite record profits by the oil companies.
If an oil company can make a record profit and not sink it back into infrastructure that would lower the gas price and hence lower profits then why would they.
If the president can support them in doing this then they will support him.

Now look at the next phase. The same pipeline that goes through Afganistan and Iraq to Saudia Arabia also runs through Iran. I wonder who is next on the target list.

So for those who say he is an idiot think again.
For those who think he is good for the country then you have a bigger problem.

On the illegal Alien thing, I spent 6 years getting my Visa to live here and a lot of paperwork and it burns me to see them giving criminals a free ride.

If the republicans get back in it will be time to re-evaluate my living in the US. The republicans with the exception of one Mr Paul from Texas.

fair enough, I am really interested in finding the proof that Bush LET 911 happen, since up to this minute there isn't any, merely mountains of innuendo and as I said earlier, "only an idiot wouldn't see that this is so" type rhetoric that is mere conjecture and completely invalid. Just saying because the Bush family made their money on oil that obviously he let 911 happen to affect gas prices is fine for an opinion, but stating it as fact is exactly what i was talking about. Things to consider about gas prices: industrial revolutions in huge countries--gas taxes--the refinery situation. The reality of it is that crude oil is NOT in short supply, refined gasoline is. The sheer amount of gasoline sold translates into the gigantic amount of profit involved, but the actual profit margins are not significantly different than for any other commodity. If you want to check out something with real quantitative profit margin ridiculousness, go after the pharmaceutical industry. Try not to base your opinions on what people just point to each other about and go 'yep' 'uhuh' 'that's right'. I could easily point you to people who back themselves up with some very convincing information and innuendo that the government is not even run by elected officals but secret new world order masterminds, but the fact is, their information is always tied to finding things that point to a conclusion they already reached, which is easy. This is the tactic often used by the people who don't just disagree with Bush's actions, but think he is somehow responsible for everything bad that happens or doesn't work out, and that he intended it to be that way. Much like the "americans are so naive and hypocritical" comment above...on what basis is this opinion reached? I feel (that's right, I don't know for sure) that it sure isn't based on a ledger with a line down the middle that weighs 'good things' and 'bad things'. I am fairly confident that the idiot rich people of America are quite good at giving huge amounts of aid to people they don't know and causes that, in truth, don't affect them at all. That's just the private sector. The government itself is also more than willing to throw billions and billions of dollars across the world for good causes. Whose work do you really think helps pay for all those United Nations programs? Is it peter schoone, and his ilk, or is it the "naief and hippocriet" American taxpayer? Before you go throwing 'you egotistical American, so typical' tripe at me, this is just plain true, and all we ask is to be respected for something that is good--plenty of my fellow citizens piss me off all the time with how stupid they are, but I am sure that in, say, Europe, everyone is enlightened and humble.
As for the Iraq thing, I would also like people to consider why some feel so irritated at all the hatred and vitriole poured out about it. President Clinton, whom I do respect, was supplied with the same information Bush had on Iraq, but was not prompted with a blatant act like 911 the effect of which was to produce a demand to do something. A literal overwhelming demand. Bush could not NOT do anything, even if he wanted to ignore it, how many members of congress and the senate ON BOTH SIDES are down in media calling to take action to keep such a thing from ever happening again? Almost all, if I recall. Pres. Clinton had even explicitly said that Saddam Hussein was a clear and present danger, who had chemical and biological weapons stockpiled. The intelligence agencies of Russia, Britain, China, Germany, and France, to name a few, also backed this up. It was also 100% believed and backed up by intelligence beyond just that of America that Saddam provided shelter to known terrorist groups. So let me ask you this, If something terrible happens to something you are sworn to protect, and everyone is calling for you to prevent anything like that from happening again, and every reliable source you have tells you that something is highly involved and capable of making that something terrible happen again, what kind of logic am I using when I call you a liar and an evil person if you tell me you've got to destroy said something, do it, and find out it wasn't as dangerous as the most reliable sources you had told you it was? What kind of person would you be if you ignored everyone and did nothing. In all reality, people, it was almost pre-ordained that we were going into Iraq after 911, and not doing so given all the evidence would have been irresponsible of any president, given that the #1 responsibility of the American president is to protect the American people above all else. That is fact fact, not wishful thinking--it even supercedes his responsibility to uphold the constitution, in the light that the constitution is to be trusted to be a tool and a method of implementing the first responsibility.

in addition, mark my words. I am tired of people saying we are planning to invade Iran. Professors at University have told me we were going to attack Iran, for sure, by April of last year. What do you think the missile defense project we're trying to put in place in Europe is for? Just to piss off Putin? How about it is for what they say it is for, a potential obstacle to nuclear blackmail of countries in the area by IRANIAN missiles. This is not the prudent plan of a someone who is planning on knocking Iran off militarily in a few. Why don't you scream and yell about the Iranian leadership for just outright saying they are planning to destroy israel? Oh, that's right. I am literally starting to believe it is because that is O.K. by you, since anti-semitism sure seems to be the good racism of proper socialists.

You guys are all effing idiots. Do you honestly think President Bush is the only person running this country? How about your democratic Congress? Yeah, THEY don't have the means to stop this "idiot madman". Either does the House of Reps. Since its all Bush's fault, and Congress and the House obviously can't stop him, we should just do away with the whole system of Checks & Balances, shouldn't we? You morons.

Read all about the Bush crime family. They have been screwing America for generations, starting with grand daddy Prescott Bush, who was a Nazi supporter in WW2. The family is pure evil and look how your economy has taken a hit. Who has the money? Bush hasn't been seen lately since the election, maybe he and his cronies are too busy counting the billions of dollars that they have stolen from Americans. Wake up and smell the corruption. Jeff, you are a misinformed and lost individual but thanks for the opportunity to vent about what is happening in the US. Also find out just exactly what happened during 911 and how your own country killed thousands of its own (minus those INSIDERS who didn't show up for work that day due to their Israeli ties. There has been so much corruption and in the government, I am starting to believe that Cheney and Bush are possessed. Bush is a moron, who has no soul. I will be glad to see the last of the monkey faced retard.

Not only that, but Bush had help from the outside as well! Those aliens from Roswell...you know, the ones who hid behind the grassy knoll?...they helped Bush blow up the World Trade Center!!!
