Microsoft Camera and Scanner Wizard not Working

I've found other people with this problem on the Internet, so it's a safe bet that someone else may need some help. I'll share what my problem is, what caused it, and how I fixed it.

When I plug a memory card into one of my card slots on the front of my computer (behind the scenes, they're USB controlled), I expect it to "autoplay" and for Windows XP to pop up the following menu of options:

Microsoft Storage Device Menu

The top selection, "Copy pictures to a folder on my computer using Microsoft Scanner and Picture Wizard", is the option that I have in mind. Upon selecting it and clicking "OK", I expect for the wizard to launch and to see a screen such as this one (referring to my memory card which Windows has assigned the drive letter "H"):

Microsoft Scanner and Camera Wizard

Today, when I plugged in my memory card, I was not greeted with that second window. In fact, nothing at all happened. If I attempted to launch the Microsoft Scanner and Camera utility from the programs menu, it would find my webcam and operate it, exclusively. There was no option for change. Thus, I had a problem.

It turns out that my problem was caused by a "registry cleaner" which I used last week in an attempt to optimize my computer. Over time, a computer's registry can grow and grow and grow with many keys remaining long after their usefulness. This slows a computer down significantly. Registry cleaners attempt to remove superfluous registry keys. Unfortunately, sometimes they remove registry keys that should stay. This was one of those times.

The keys which were inappropriately removed were the following. However, before reading the following, be aware that how the characters display on your computer screen may not be how they actually should display. For example, under the "View" menu in Internet Explorer, you'll see a tab for "Encoding". The encoding I.E. chooses when it displays web pages will affect what you see. If I don't deselect the "Auto-Select" option under encoding, my printer (Canon F50 multipass printer, scanner, fax) doesn't work! It gives me all kinds of errors. So, sometimes the encoding used by my Internet Explorer windows doesn't display things correctly (most notoriously, those bizarre open-quote and close-quote characters which look different from one another, and are not the normal ones you'd see on the key [usually] next to your "enter" key).

So, with that in mind, below are the keys which I've had to re-introduce to my system's registry:

So if you're having similar problems, perhaps you may want to check for the existence of these keys. If they're not there, perhaps you may want to introduce them.

If you're not sure how to do that, I'll share with you how I did it:

The registry cleaner which (I think) removed the keys is called "RegClean" and can be downloaded freely from various sites on the Internet. For me, it downloaded as a self-extracting executable called "regclean.exe", which created a folder called "RegClean", within which was another "RegClean.exe" - the actual program. Upon running this program, the cleaner scans the registry for (allegedly) bad keys, prompts you for whether or not you'd like it to remove these keys, and before removing them it places a back-up of the registry within the "RegClean" directory (probably because I left the program in that directory; had I run it from another directory, I'm guessing that it'd have placed the back-up in the directory from which it ran, but I've not tested this).

My method of adding these keys back into the registry was to change the extension of that back-up file, which previously ended in ".reg", to have it end in ".txt" (I did this simply by adding the ".txt" to the end, not by eliminating the ".reg"). I then edited the file in notepad, removing all of the text except for the top REGEDIT4 command (I assume it's a command), the comments, and the 3 missing keys. I then changed the file extension back to a ".reg" extension (by removing the ".txt" which I'd added earlier), double clicked on it, and accepted the prompt from Windows to have the keys added to the registry. Once I did that, I tried my memory card once again and - PRESTO! - everything once again worked fine.

As I said earlier, how you see the text for those keys in this post depends upon your computer's encoding. To deal with that problem, I have uploaded the registry file which I described in the previous paragraph using a ".txt" extension. You may download it at your leisure. Right-click here and select "Save As" and save it to an appropriate place on your computer. (If you haven't figured out what to do with it by reading the above paragraphs, then perhaps you shouldn't be messing with your registry.)

Good luck with whatever problem you're having!

Your solution was the first one that actually worked. I searched and searched, but only your's work. Thanks a million. It was really making it hard for others in my family that this feature wasn't working. Thanks again!

My problem is similar but I get this pop up banner which reads " The computer cannot detect the scanner or camera. Please make sure the device is turned on and properly connected to the computer." Is this the same problem or not? Please HEELLLLLLP!!!!!! Dave

Thanks a lot!!
It works very well!! :)

Posted by: Arkhons at April 13, 2006 06:56 AM

Found your blog after months, I say again months looking for a solution for autoplay. THANK YOU! I did have to complete it a bit differently, when I double click on the .reg file, Notepad open up. I then edited the registery, selected File, Import-then loaded the file. Worked great, as I type 256 pictures are coming in. Once again.

Wow...amazing...I couldn't figure out what happened to the camera wizard. I had the same problem with a reg cleaner. Everything is working fine now. I'm so happy that I found your site.

Thanx Ken

Posted by: Ken at May 10, 2006 06:27 PM

Thank you soooo Much. I had missed the wizard and my wife loved it too. Only comment change the area that says retain regedit4, delete the wordage and leave the keys and save. It works so fine.

Well...I had the same problem as you...exactly the same problem...

And when I first saw this, I thought it was a hoax, or some type of virus, trojan, malignant software scam...

But now, after following your directions...I thank you...you fixed it perfectly...really well don!

You are so cool...you're my new Microsoft troubleshooter hero!!!

Thanks, I really appreciate it.

Now a frequent visitor to your site.

Thank you

Thank you does not seem like enough to say regarding your "fix" for the camera & scanner wizard. I have spent the last day and 1/2 trying to fix it, then I found your web site through a Yahoo search. I worked like a charm. Best Regards

Posted by: Andy at September 4, 2006 11:50 AM

As the with the others; THANKS! This is exactly what happened to my computer and although i hand created the Keys, i looked and saw them in my StompSoft Reg. cleaner folder. what is wrong with the people that write these programs that they would remove such vital keys which are part of XP? it makes their product useless becuase i am afraid to use them and remove more good keys.

Posted by: RickD at September 9, 2006 11:15 AM

I also found that if RealPlayer is installed on my computer the picture wizard will not work. As soon as I removed the RealPlayer program my picture wizard worked right away.

Happy hour!!!!!!!!!!!!

Windows Server 2003 incorporates Windows Image Acquisition (WIA). Since most servers are not equipped with scanners or cameras, the Windows Image Acquisition service is disabled by default to reduce system resources used by the operating system.

If you want to make your Imaging device work under Windows Server 2003 then you first need to enable the Windows Image Acquisition Service. To do so, go to Services (under Start/Programs/Administrative Tools) and find the Windows

Image Acquisition Service. Right click on it and go into its properties.
Change the Startup Type dropdown list value from disabled to automatic and reboot prior to installing your devices drivers and plugging it in.

I have similar problem, i check and found that the registry entries are there. What else I can check to get this working?

hello, i have kind of the same problem, im using 2003 server and i have the Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) service running but the problem is that when i plug a memory card, it shows this options: print images, visualize, Media player Reproduce, open folder etc, it doesnt give the Copy Images option and thats what i really want, so when i plug the MC it open that nice wizard and copies all images and clean up the card..it doesnt do it? anyone with ideas? that REG options are already in my own reg, so anyone knows how to solve this? i didnt want to use any 3rd party program to this..

if anyone has a way to solve this plz email me at donpeyote atsign gmail

Posted by: pedro at February 15, 2007 10:28 AM

Hooray and thanks! I initally tried downloading and running the MS Autofix program for this problem, which told me there was a problem, but Autofix couldn't fix it (!) ... then I found your solution, and though I have NO IDEA about fiddling with registry files, I did exactly what you said (including making the back-up) and it worked immediately. Thanks again!

Posted by: Traceylt at February 22, 2007 02:06 PM

I had similar problems. The wizard came up when the camera was turned on but nothing happened when I clicked on it.

All my registry keys were correct as well and nothing seemed to work. I tried reinstalling the camera drivers for the heck of it but I kept getting "Setup failed to launch installation engine - The RPC server is unavailable" error messages.

The Remote Procedure Call (RPC) was turned on and set to automatic but the Remote Call Prodecure (RPC) Locator wasn't. I started it and set it to automatic and rebooted but it didn't do a thing either. I then enabled the DCOM services and the camera wizard started working without even reinstalling the drivers. I wanted to see if the drivers would install too so I checked that as well and they did install without error messages.

If you are having similar problems and the steps listed in the above threads still don't work for you then try this:

- Go to Start/Run and type services.msc , press enter.
- Choose the extended view tab from the bottom of the window on the right side.
- Go to Remote Procedure Call (RPC) and double click on it. Click on start and change the 'startup type' status to Automatic.
- Go to Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Locator and double click on it. Click on start and change the 'startup type' status to Automatic.
- Go to DCOM Server Process Launcher and double click on it. Click on start and change the 'startup type' status to Automatic.
- Reboot.

Hopefully the wizard will work correctly..

I have tried all the above things but still cannot get my wizard to work. My scanner works fine with it's software but I like the wizard better.

I'm also having the same problems with Windows XP...used to have pop-up box for camera wizard as soon as I inserted my photo card but now nothing happens. I think it happened after a clean-up . I am a novice and am really afraid to try and reconfigure the program. If I do this incorrectly am I in danger of doing something really awful?

Finally someone shows the issue in an appropriate way (with images for the first and second screen) and focuses the solution in WIA rather than in Autoplay. I found several web pages recommending to fix the AutoPlay feature while the issue was clearly the camera wizard. Thanks for your post! It worked perfectly! Now I know that RegClean may produce some issues with the latest versions of Windows.

I had the same problem when I used the memory stick, nothing happened, the usual pop up boxes had disappeared. Had not used a registry cleaner but had recently uploaded a new Adobe reader update which included a new Adobe photo section as well which had defaulted over the original Microsoft Wizard, so I uninstalled the Adobe one but I think it must've corrupted the Wizard. Anyway I unticked the "Encoding" tab as per your instructions and I found the Wizard worked again. Most appreciated.

I would like to reiterate a comment made 2 years ago, because it solved my problem!! When RealPlayer was added to my computer, I no longer was able to auto-launch the photo wizard. I spent countless hours trying to figure out why, until I found this site & read others' comments. So I uninstalled RealPlayer (which is less important to me than quick, automatic photo loading) & it solved my problem. Thank you for a great source of info & help. PS: I had no registry cleaner to deal with, so this alone solved my problem. Hope this helps someone else.

Hi Jeff
My Scanner and Camera Wizard dropped out during uploading to My Pictures for no reason. It pops up and works for the new scanner, but not my camera. At one stage I was having problems with my memory card, and it seems the scanner started doing something during the upload attempt. Do you think it corrupted something? I am not computer literate and don't know where to find the registry. Can you please offer some advice. Thanks Margaret

Posted by: MARGARET FORBUTT at August 1, 2011 04:41 PM

Hi Jeff, further to my previous email, I did not explain that I am using a memory card inserted into a USB device. The camera detector recognises it and I am able to upload photos using Microsoft Live Camera Gallery, however I prefer to use the Microsoft Scanner & Camera Wizard. It seems okay for the scanner, but it has dropped out for the camera. It happened during several uploads of pictures I was taking on Thursday morning. As I said, at one stage, the scanner started running, instead of the camera detector. Don't know if that did something. Any advice you are able to give would be very much appreciated. I have spent about 20 hours trying to solve the problem, as well as reinstalling the Pentax software twice. I also did a System Restore twice, to no avail. Regards Margaret

Posted by: MARGARET FORBUTT at August 1, 2011 05:04 PM

Hi Jeff again, just as an aside, in the photoshot picture of the wizard above, I notice it is memory card reader 'H', whereas my memory card is 'F'. Does this mean anything?

Posted by: MARGARET FORBUTT at August 1, 2011 05:05 PM

I am sorry, Margaret, I do not know how to solve that problem. My first thought is that you should browse to the memory card using Windows Explorer and delete everything off of it by hand (remembering that if there are still untransferred photos [or other files] on this card, they'll be destroyed, so get everything off it that you want first). There may be a file on the card which Windows is using to decide which course of action to take once the card is plugged in. (Another way to check this is to plug several other cards like it into your computer and see how it reacts.)

Good luck!
